Medocrity

I'm feeling old. And Mediocre. And I don't like mediocrity to say the least. There were things I used to feel "really good" at. Confident if you will. Now, I wonder.

Parenting
Really, does anyone out there feel like they are just totally awesome at this. If so, please share your secret. Every night I am trying to think of ways to improve this. I'm hit and miss with family home evening. Do I get them their daily fruits and veges? Are we reading enough? Too much TV? Enough play? You get the idea.

Piano
Not to toot my horn, but back in the day I was pretty good. I lived for piano competitions. I loved that thrill of being on stage playing this piano. I loved having a piano teacher I dearly loved and respected because she could push me to tears. Now I'm lucky to sight read a hymn. How did this happen????

Nursing
Perhaps it has something to do with the renewal of my nursing license. Eleven years! Seriously, has it been that long?! I remember the good ole days when I was just a "baby" trying to not appear as unsure about my skills as I felt. Before Katie was born I was at my peak. I knew more than I ever had about premature babies. I had toyed with the idea of becoming a nurse practitioner, but didn't because that EPT was positive and my husband was in medical school. And lets be honest, we didn't need any more debt and ultimately I've always wanted to be home with my children. And baby number one was on it's way!!!
Eleven years later I feel very much out of my prime every time I work. Maybe it is because I only work a few times a month.

Athletics
Tennis and a daily gym routine. I think I've been to the gym 10 times in the last four weeks. I can't even beat my own husband in a tennis match. And he never played tennis in high school or college. I did!

Photography
I don't think I've been good at this at any time, but I would certainly like to be. The more I experiment the more addicted I get. It's like my drug. I am constantly blog stalking my favorite photo blogs and researching any tutorials I can. Katie just rolls her eyes when I try to take her picture. I love goofing around with Photoshop even though I'm totally clueless. I keep trying to figure out how to find the money for some serious lenses. I already have a serious wish list. It frustrates me that my pictures don't always turn out how I pictured them in my mind.

So, on that note, hears to mediocrity! And heres to tomorrow when I might magically recover some of my former skills or acquire some awesome new ones!

I feel the same way about work...although I think my decline started in towards the end of my third trimester, not after maternity leave!

Have you started reading the mckmama blog? I have several photo bloggers I follow, I can send you links if you'd like.

Oh I loved this post. I've been feeling that same way, it's like I have all these hobbies on my little back burner, meanwhile losing talent (of what's left!) I LOVE LOVE LOVE those great big pictures of Katie! How did you get those pictures so big??? p.s. I need some photography tips...I got the D60, and I'm still in the 'don't know what I'm doing' phase...I got some insight from (my friend Lillie), and that has helped a little, but I was wondering what mode you shoot in the most? Do you shoot in A? And if so, what are your numbers? I know, so many questions, but if you get a minute I'd love to pick apart your brain!!

I think it is the way life works...I just keep hoping that if I'm trying my best now, in the next life, my piano skills/brains, etc will be back at the top of their game :)...For now, I think the key to life is finding peace with mediocrity and embracing the joys that come from being a mom...because really our little ones are no where near mediocore, right? :) Your family is adorable by the way!

Who are you judging yourself against? An olympian? I think you are way above mediocre. If you want to feel better about yourself, watch a little trash-reality TV. You will come away thinking, "Holy Crap, I AM THE BOMB!!!"

And, I love your photography, you definitely have a nurse brain, as I love to work with you, and I can only play one-handed Mary Had a Little Lamb on the piano!

Have a great day!!
